Amid rapid globalization, it is critically important for Japan to promote its connections with the rest of the world. To this end, in 2011, a group of Japanese documentary producers launched the annual international documentary festival Tokyo Docs. Our vision is to promote international co-productions and the overseas transmission of Japanese documentaries that communicate the current climate within Japan, such as the country’s unique social problems and its enticingly rich, multi-layered culture. We also hope to bring further attention to the notable Japanese individuals who are attracting attention from around the world.
Initially, Tokyo Docs was held under the name “Tokyo TV Forum,” but last year, on its third anniversary, the festival was renamed “Tokyo Docs.” The name change reflects an expanded festival that includes the participation of many talented documentary filmmakers and producers from throughout Asia.
Tokyo Docs is co-hosted by Tokyo TV Forum (TTVF), a non-profit organization that was established specifically for the festival, and the Association of All Japan TV Program Production Companies (ATP), which boasts a membership of more than 120 television production companies. Tokyo Docs is overseen by an executive committee comprising representatives from both TTVF and ATP.
Tokyo Docs is held with support from relevant government offices, including the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, as well as NHK, the Japan Commercial Broadcasters Association, and a variety of other organizations within the broadcasting industry. In addition, the event receives aid and support from foundations such as the Hoso Bunka Foundation and the numerous TV stations and companies that are supporting members of TTVF.
